Md. Rafiqul Islam, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biotechnology at    Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), Dhaka, Bangladesh. He started his professional career as a Lecturer in the Department of Biotechnology, PSTU in December 2012. His field of expertise is in Biotechnology and Plant molecular Biology (Plant-microbe interaction). He completed his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Agricultural and in Research with a thesis on “Inheritance and Development of Molecular Markers Linked to Bacterial Fruit Blotch Resistance in Melon” from Sunchon National University, Sunchon, South Korea in February 2020. His PhD research mainly focused on the plant molecular biology (Plant-microbe interaction) specially identify the eco-friendly host resistant germplasm against pathogen (bacteria and fungus) along with development of plants as well as bacterial molecular markers. The eventual goal of his research is to develop advanced approaches and assist plant breeders for developing germplasm to improve crop adaptability and resilience under stress environmental conditions as well as improving crop yield to achieve agricultural sustainability.

Dr. Rafiqul completed his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Hons.) with secured CGPA 3.91 out of 4.00 (securing 6th. position) in the academic year of 2002-2006. He also completed his Master of Science in Genetics and Plant Breeding from the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding at SAU and secured CGPA 3.63 out of 4.00 in the academic year of 2007-2009. He received the Golden Seed project Fellowship 2017-2020 as a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) researcher under the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA), Republic of Korea, for pursuing PhD study at Sunchon National University, Sunchon, South Korea. He was also awarded the fellowship from the National Science and Information and Communication Technology (NSICT) for the Master of Science in Genetics and Plant Breeding.

To achieve SDG goal 4 (Quality Education): Dr. Rafiqul committed to produce quality graduates through teaching and motivation. In addition, he has a passion to ensure quality research in agriculture and biotechnology through innovation and dissemination of new technologies to the researcher’s and farmer’s door.
