Md Ziaur Rahman Bhuiyan

Md Ziaur Rahman Bhuiyan Ph.D is an Associate Professor of Plant Pathology at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh.

He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Hons.) from Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University. He also completed Master of Science in Plant Pathology from the same university. He got his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from North Dakota State University, USA. His research focus was molecular detection of novel pathogens in sugar beet, fungicide resistance mutation (QoI and DMI), and understanding of pathogen infection mechanisms using confocal microscopy. He authored and co-authored 23 papers, 12 posters, 9 oral presentations during his PhD study. He was awarded prestigious doctoral dessertation fellowship for his PhD research at North Dakota State University. He went to North Carolina State University, USA for Postdoctoral research (2023-2024) where he worked on genomics of downy mildew of cucurbits, fungicide resistance mutations, clade detection assays of Pseudoperonospora cubensis, epidemiology etc. He received Dean’s Award for his undergraduate results and awarded Ministry of Science and Technology Fellowship for his MS research.

He received several prestigious awards, fellowship, and scholarships for his excellent research contributions during PhD program which includes Doctoral Dissertation Award, Neil C. Gudmestad Fellowship, APS North Central Division Travel Award, Graduate Student Council Research Award, Alan G. Dexter Scholarship Award for Sugar beet Research, H. Arthur Lamey Outstanding Graduate Student Scholarship etc. He is the active member of several professional organizations including American Phytopathological Society, Gamma Sigma Delta, North Dakota Chapter, Krishibid Institution of Bangladesh-KIB, and Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Alumni Association, Bangladesh. He has significantly contributed leading a number of professional organizations such as Senate of Student Government-North Dakota State University, Vice President, Gamma Sigma Delta-North Dakota Chapter, President, Plant Pathology Organization, and Bangladeshi Student Organization (BSO), NDSU.

He is teaching a number of undergraduate and MS courses includes Introduction to Plant Pathology and Microbiology (PLPA 205), Principles of Plant Pathology and Seed Pathology (PLPA 353), Diseases of Horticultural Crops and Postharvest Pathology (PLPA 457), Crop Protection Strategy-2 (PLPA 312) in undergraduate level and Mycology (PLPA 501), Phytobacteriology (PLPA 509), Clinical Plant Pathology (PLPA 505), Molecular biology of host pathogen interaction (PLPA 506).

Research Interest: Mycology, molecular detection of plant pathogens, fungicide resistance mechanism, population genetics of oomycetes, phytobacteriology, molecular biology of host-pathogen interactions, seed pathology, bio-control agents, integrated disease management, precision agriculture.
