Welcome to the Department of Plant Pathology

The Department of Plant Pathology at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) in Dhaka, Bangladesh, is a distinguished academic and research unit committed to advancing knowledge in the field of plant disease management. Since its inception, the department has played a pivotal role in educating students, conducting cutting-edge research, and offering solutions to the pressing challenges of crop protection in Bangladesh’s agriculture-based economy.

The department offers comprehensive undergraduate (BSc Ag.) and postgraduate (MS and PhD) programs that provide students with theoretical understanding and hands-on skills in plant disease diagnosis, pathogen biology, epidemiology, and integrated disease management. The curriculum is regularly updated to reflect recent scientific advancements and the changing demands of the agricultural sector.

Research activities in the department are focused on the identification, characterization, and management of major plant diseases affecting field crops, vegetables, fruits, ornamentals, and plantation crops. Emphasis is placed on both traditional and molecular approaches to plant pathology, including the use of biological control agents, plant disease resistance, integrated pest management (IPM), and molecular diagnostics. The department has well-equipped laboratories and facilities for teaching and research, including tissue culture and molecular biology labs.

Faculty members are actively involved in collaborative research projects with national and international organizations, contributing significantly to the development of sustainable agricultural practices and disease-resistant crop varieties. The department also provides extension services to farmers and stakeholders through training programs, field demonstrations, and disease surveillance initiatives.

With a strong commitment to academic excellence, research innovation, and community service, the Department of Plant Pathology at SAU continues to be a leader in building a resilient agricultural system in Bangladesh through effective plant disease management and scientific advancement.
