The Department of Agricultural Botany is one of the major departments of the Faculty of Agriculture of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka. At present this department has nineteen affiliated faculty members who teach a wide portfolio of Agricultural Botany courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels and provide a center of expertise for numerous aspects of plant science.
The name of this department has been changed over the time. The Department of Botany was established in 1938 since the Bengal Agricultural Institute was established. This name of the department was transformed into Crop Botany in 1962 and then it was named as Agricultural Botany in 2002. Department of Agricultural Botany is one of the major departments of the Faculty of Agriculture. Botany is the combination of 23 fundamental branches of plant science. The branches Plant Pathology, Genetics and Plant breeding and Biotechnology was evolved as separate department in different times. At present, the Department of Agricultural Botany is offering courses at undergraduate level for the Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Agribusiness Management and for the Faculty of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Marine Science. Department of Agricultural Botany also offers M.S. and Ph.D degree in Agricultural Botany. At present the department is offering courses on different aspects of plant morphology, plant anatomy, plant taxonomy, plant embryology, plant physiology, plant ecology, economic botany and molecular biology, etc. This department has laboratories for the demonstration of various aspects of plant morphology, anatomy, physiology and plant ecology which are related to the offered courses. We have “Plant Physiology Laboratory” and “Roof Garden and Eco Center” for conducting advanced research. The students and faculties of the department also conduct research in the experimental field. We also have submergence tank for conducting research on waterlogging or flooding stress. The graduate students undertake collaborative research with the professors of other departments of our university, professors of other universities, with the scientists of various organizations like Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture and others.
In 1938, Sher-e-Bangla A.K. Fazlul Huq envisioned a new era of agricultural education to empower students with knowledge and innovation for sustainable farming. This vision gave birth to Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, a center of excellence in agricultural development.
