Welcome to the Department of Fisheries Biology and Genetics !!
The Department of Fisheries Biology and Genetics is one of the major departments of the Faculty of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Marine Science in Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University. The department conducts teaching and cutting-edge research to solve basic questions in fisheries and marine sciences, and applies basic biological and molecular biology knowledge to support sustainable production of fish and other aquatic lives, and conservation of inland aquatic and marine ecosystem. The department offers theoretical and practical courses basically on different fundamental subjects with some applied ones such as aquatic zoology, systematics, ichthyology, aquatic biodiversity, marine biology, fish physiology, principal of genetics, evolutionary biology, molecular biotechnology and hatchery management along with some elective courses in undergraduate (BSc) and graduate (MS) programs. The department is well equipped for state-of-art research in aquatic biology, molecular genetics and biotechnology including DNA sequencing and genotyping, DNA barcoding and metabarcoding, application of molecular markers, population genomics, molecular cloning, gene expression, cryopreservation of germ cells, histology, tissue culture of aquatic organisms. The department is involved in developing sustainable breeding technologies of different indigenous and exotic fish species having conservation and commercial values. The department is also engaged in some marine extension, research, and conservation activities to contribute to the protection of vulnerable and endangered species, and for improving the livelihood status of coastal and marine fishers. The mission of the Department is to provide a solid foundation of current knowledge and skills in the field of fisheries and marine biology to prepare undergraduate and postgraduate students for bright careers and advanced study.
In 1938, Sher-e-Bangla A.K. Fazlul Huq envisioned a new era of agricultural education to empower students with knowledge and innovation for sustainable farming. This vision gave birth to Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, a center of excellence in agricultural development.
